마이카(Mission in Christian Artist, MICA) 기독학생회가 지난 4월 3일 엘리콧시티 소재 벧엘교회에서 피바디음대기독학생회 ‘리조이스(Rejoice)’의 찬양의 밤이 진행되는 가운데 단체 전시회를 가졌다.
Mission in Christian Artist는 마이카대학(Maryland Institute College of Art)에 재학중인 기독 한국 학생들의 예배모임으로, 지난 2003년 봄에 3명의 기독 한국 학생들이 모여 시작됐다.
이들은 매주 화요일 저녁 9시30분에 모여 예배를 드리며, 크리스천 예술가로 살아가는 것에 대해 기도, 연구, 나눔의 터를 통해 성장하고 있다.
단체 전시회는 4년전 하나님의 예술가들이 모여 ‘주님을 예술, 음악과 미술로 모여 함께 빛내자’라는 각오로 시작했으며, 매년 학생회에서 정하는 주제로 전시회를 이어오고 있다.
올해 주제는 'Shine for His Kingdom'이엇으며, 다니엘서에 등장하는 그시대 여러 왕들에게 그들이 왕됨을 강요당하며 위협당했던 다니엘과 하나님이 그의 왕되심을 지키기 위한 다니엘의 저항, 끝까지 죽음을 무릅쓰고 자신을 통해 진정한 하나님을 나타냈던 다니엘을 본받자는 취지였다.
아직은 신앙생활과 학교생활을 열심히 병행하며 자라나고 있는 마이카 대학생들의 단체전에는 재학생 15명의 작품들이 전시되었으며, 각 학생들의 마음속에서부터 비롯되어 그림속에 담겨있는 분명한 하나님의 존재가 있었다.
마이카 기독학생회 허영인 회장은 “매해마다 점점 늘어나는 마이카 기독 학생 전시회에 대한 관심으로 많은 분들이 찾아주셨고, 학생들은 이 전시회가 하나님의 이름으로 모여 더욱 더 뜻깊음을 알고, 각자 또는 서로의 그림에 담겨있는 마음과 의도를 조금 더 전달해드리려 노력했습니다.”라고 전했다.

who believes in me should stay in darkness." John 13:21
"Light is sweet, and it pleases the eyes to see the sun." Ecclesiastes 11:7
Room is personal. Within, there is everything of me that one can see and cannot see altogether. It was light that always have existed with me in that private and intimate place. Besides from the basic knowledge that it brings warmth and brightness, after becoming closer to God, whom I believe in, I started to pay more attention to this light that appears more than hundred times in the Bible. And gradually this light became something very special as much as the room, which I consider as a very personal and precious space. However, living in a different place now unfortunately without much sunlight, I miss the presence of the light from the very first moment in my new room to the point which I wish to display the drawings of the previous room I lived in to feel the presence of the light with me and within the space.

“CMYK Jesus” expresses my Christian faith and artistic investigation in printmaking through screen printing overlapping numerous Crucifix (1310-17) fresco paintings by Giotto di Bondone. I discover when studying back about classical Italian Renaissance paintings, only one Jesus representation is presented at a time. I question the old and the new Christian art by exposing multiple Jesus, ‘why only one Jesus?’ The more Jesus we have, the better. On the other hand, “CMYK Jesus” brings up awareness on Christian art on how depictions of a religious figure could easily become an idol that makes God distressing the most.
The process of CMYK printing reflects Christian value. CMYK stands for each color cyan, magenta, yellow and black layers used in one print. “CMYK Jesus” represents Christians, varying in characters and appearances have to unite to complete image of Jesus.
