뉴욕목사회가 성명서를 낸 데 이어 대뉴욕지구한인교회협의회(회장 김원기 목사)가 9월 15일 리버사이드교회 법회를 앞두고 리버사이드교회가 법회를 취소하길 강력히 요청하는 편지를 보냈다. 뉴욕교협은 "리버사이드교회는 개교회가 아닌, 기독교 역사 속의 소중한 유산"이라며 "하나님께 예배를 드리도록 건축된 교회에서 목탁을 두드리며 불교의 법회를 연다는 것은 이방신에게 절하는 행위로 하나님께 죄를 범하는 것은 물론이거니와 모든 기독교인들을 모독하는 행위로 간주될 것이다. 또한 종교간 갈등도 심화될 것"이라며 우려의 뜻을 담아 편지를 전달했다. 다음은 편지 원문이다.

본 단체는 대뉴욕지구 한인교회협의회로 뉴욕일원에 있는 500여개의 한인교회의 연합체로서 지난 37년간의 역사를 갖고 단합된 기독교 연합체입니다.
다름이 아니오라 지난 9월 2일(금)자 00 일보의 전면 광고에 따르면 오는 9월 15일(목) 저녁 6시 30분에 뉴욕의 맨하탄에 위치한 리버사이드처치(The Riverside Church NYC; 490 Riverside Dr., NY 10027)에서 '진제대종사 뉴욕방문 대법회'를 연다고 광고하고 있습니다.
또한 한국의 관련 웹사이트를 방문하면 미국에서 제일 큰 교회(리버사이드처치)에서 불교계에서 유래 없이 불교의 법회를 연다고 광고하고 있습니다. 이번 불교법회를 위해 한국에서 많은 관계자들이 방문하고 미국 내에서도 많은 불교계 지도자들과 불자들이 참석 할 것으로 예상됩니다.
리버사이드처치는 한 개교회로 생각하기 보다는 그 역사와 전통, 그리고 그 의미로 볼 때에 미국 및 전 세계의 기독교역사에서는 없어서는 안 될 소중한 유산이며, 락펠러 재단의 믿음과 신앙의 의미가 고스란히 담겨있는 교회라고 여겨집니다.
이런 의미 있는 교회에서 불교의 법회를 연다는 것은 도저히 납득할 수 없는 행태로 교회에서 법회를 연다는 발상을 한 불교계의 관련자나 이를 알고도 대여 해 준 리버사이드 처치의 담임목사와 관계자는 분명하게 이 행사를 중지 하고 모든 기독교인들과 교계에 다시는 이런 일이 일어나지 않도록 조치와 함께 확실한 답변을 해야 할 것입니다
하나님께 예배를 드리도록 건축된 교회에서 목탁을 두드리며 불교의 법회를 연다는 것은 이방신에게 절하는 행위로 하나님께 죄를 범하는 것은 물론이거니와 모든 기독교인들을 모독하는 행위로 간주될 것입니다. 이번 불교의 법회가 한인들에 의해 준비되었다는 사실에 우리 기독교 연합체인 대뉴욕지구 한인교회협의회는 통탄을 금할 수 없으며, 이번 일로 종교간 갈등이 심화됨은 물론이거니와 반목과 질시가 생겨나지 않을까 심히 염려스럽습니다.
다시 한 번 간곡히 부탁드릴 말씀은 리버사이드처치의 담임목사와 관계자들은 9월 15일(목) 저녁 6시 30분에 예정된 불교계의 법회를 취소하여 주시길 깅력히 요청 합니다. 귀 교회의 평안과 하나님의 크신 은총이 늘 함께 하시기를 기도합니다.

Subject: Korean churches' stand on Buddhist Ceremony being held at The Riverside Church
Date: in the year of our Lord. Sep 10th, 2011.
Grace and peace to you from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.
We are The Council of Korean Church Association of Greater New York that was established 37 years ago and currently has over 500 united member churches.
According to Full-page Advertising on September2, 2011 in Korean Times newspaper, there is a Jin-Jei Dae-Jong-Sa, New York Visit Buddhist Ceremony being held at The Riverside Church (NYC; 490 Riverside Dr., NY 10027) on September 15, 2011at 6:30 PM.
And related Korean web-sites advertise that the largest church in the U.S. (Riverside Church) is hosting the Buddhist Ceremony without any objections. This event is expected to attract many leaders of Buddhism from Korea as well as Buddhist visitors from both Korea and in the U.S.
Riverside Church is not just any church, but its roots are much deeper. Not only does it represent heritage and tradition of Christianity in the U.S., but it is a legacy. The church bears the faith and devotion of the Rockefeller foundation.
It is incomprehensible why the Buddhists wanted the ceremony to be held at a church with such heritage and why The Riverside Church agreed to let them use the facilities. We hold the presiding pastor and those who participated in the decision accountable and demand a formal apology. This should not have occurred and we have to implements policies to prevent future mishaps.
A place built to house a place worship should not be misused as a place where others gods and idols are worshiped as it breaks God’s laws and is insulting to Christians. The fact that this Buddhist ceremony has been organized by Korean Buddhists is regrettable to our organization (The Council of Korean Church Association of Greater New York). We are concerned that this event will be a catalyst for conflict between the Christians and Buddhist.
We sincerely ask that you cancel the Buddhist ceremony scheduled for September 15, 2011 at 6:30PM at The Riverside Church of New York.
