지난 수요일 애틀랜타에서 처음으로 열린 제 42회 도브 어워드의 주인공은 프란체스카 베티스텔리(Francesca Battistelli, 25)와 크리스 어거스트(Chris August, 29) 였다.
베티스텔리는 ‘올해의 아티스트’ ‘베스트 여성 보컬’ 상을 받았고, ‘Beautiful, Beautiful’로 ‘팝/컨템포러리 레코디드 송’ 부분에서 우승을 차지했다. 데뷔 2년 만에 최고의 여성 보컬로 자리매김 하게 된 것이다.
그녀는 “나는 지금 이 곳에 서서 아무 말도 할 수 없습니다. 감사할 뿐입니다”라고 소감을 밝혔다.
베티스텔리의 올해 도브 어워드의 수상은 올해 거둬들인 성공의 일부에 불과하다. 그녀의 두 번째 앨범 ‘Hundred More Years’는 빌보드 차트 탑 크리스천 앨범 부분에서 지난 3월 1위에 올랐으며, 올해 가장 인기 있는 콘서트로 꼽히는 ‘윈터 잼’에 참여하기도 했다.
AP와의 인터뷰에서 그녀는 “나는 시작할 때부터 사람들에게 용기를 주는 곳을 쓰고 싶었어요. 나를 슬프게 하거나 화나게 하는 곡은 좋아하지 않습니다. 그래서 항상 사람들을 북돋아주는 곡을 향해 왔습니다”라고 밝히기도 했다.
올해 데뷔한 크리스 어거스트는 첫 번째 도브 상을 수상하는 영예를 안았다. 그는 ‘올해의 신인’과 ‘올해의 남성 보컬’ 부분에서 상을 받았으며, 그의 데뷔 앨범인 ‘No Far Away’는 ‘올해의 팝/컨템퍼러리 앨범’에 꼽혔다.
그는 수상소감에서 “크리스천으로 겸손할 뿐입니다. 이런 상을 기대하지는 않았습니다. 다만 음악을 만들고 예수님을 섬기고 싶었습니다. 하지만 함께 오랫동안 음악을 해온 사람으로서 결국에 누군가 ‘정말 멋진 일을 했고 그에 대한 상을 준다’고 하니 기분이 정말 좋습니다”라고 밝혔다.
다른 수상자로는 10번째 도브상을 받은 제이슨 크랩과 올해만 세 개의 상을 거머쥔 그레이스오브포인트 그룹이다.
크랩은 싱글 앨범 ‘Sometimes I Cry’가 ‘올해의 노래’ 부분에서 상을 받았으며, 그의 아버지 제럴드 크랩 역시 올해의 작사가상을 받아 눈길을 끌었다.
제이슨 크랩은 “나는 아버지가 지구상에 최고의 작사가라고 생각한다. 아버지는 관계된 모든 이들과 일들로부터 영감을 얻는다. 이런 분이 아버지인 것이 기쁘고, 그로부터 많은 것을 배운다”고 언급하기도 했다.
올해 처음 신설된 상으로 가스펠 뮤직 채널에서 ‘올해의 선행상’을 시상했는데, 그 주인공은 스티븐 커티스와 그의 부인 메리 베스가 됐다. 이들은 고아 자선단체 ‘Show Hope’를 설립해 고아들을 돌봐왔다.
