“The Unfinished, Unfinishable Mission”
Scripture: Matthew 28:19-20 : “Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”

오늘 이렇게 귀한 자리에서 말씀을 나누게 되어 무한한 영광으로 생각합니다. 하지만 동시에 송구한 마음 금할 길이 없습니다. 고(故) 에스더 권 선교사님은 저의 사학과 선배님이셨습니다. 그럼에도 불구하고, 부끄럽게도 이번 기회를 통해서야 그분의 삶과 사역을 알게 되었기 때문입니다. 그런 의미에서 오늘 이 자리는 참으로 소중합니다. 평생을 선교에 매진하시다 하나님의 품으로 돌아가신 에스더 권 선교사님을 기억하는 시간이기 때문입니다. 그 분의 헌신에 감사하며, 그 분이 걸어가신 선교의 길을 따르겠노라 다짐하는 자리이기 때문입니다. 이처럼 뜻깊은 자리를 마련해 주신 연목회 정효남 회장님과 모든 임원분께 진심으로 감사의 인사를 전합니다.
It is truly a great honor for me to be here today and share these words with you in such a special event. But at the same time, I have to admit, I feel a heavy heart and a bit of regret. The late Missionary Esther Kwon was actually my senior in the History Department. And yet, I’m ashamed to say that it was only through this opportunity that I truly learned about her life and her ministry. That is why being here today means so much to me. This is a time to remember Missionary Esther Kwon, who devoted her entire life to missions before returning to the Lord’s embrace. It’s a place where we can give thanks for her devotion and promise to follow in the missionary footsteps she left behind. I want to say a heartfelt thank you to President Hyo-nam Jung and all the board members and executive team of the Yon-Mok Association for putting together such a meaningful event.
오늘 우리가 읽은 본문은 부활하신 주님께서 제자들에게 주신 '지상명령(Great Commission)'입니다. 4복음서가 전하는 부활의 핵심은 결국 하나로 수렴됩니다. 바로 “전하라”는 것입니다. 예수님의 부활을 처음으로 목격한 막달라 마리아에게 주어진 사명도 “가서 전하라”는 것이었습니다. 엠마오로 가던 두 제자에게 주신 메시지도 갈릴리로 가서 부활의 주님을 전하라는 것이었습니다. 목사든 평신도든, 남성이든 여성이든, 우리가 어떤 직업과 상황에 놓여 있든지 간에 그리스도인의 사명은 단 하나입니다. 우리의 삶의 현장에서 예수 그리스도를 전하는 것입니다.
The passage we read today is the 'Great Commission' that the risen Lord gave to His disciples. When you look at the four Gospels, the core message of the Resurrection really boils down to one thing: "Go and proclaim." The mission given to Mary Magdalene, the very first person to see the risen Jesus, was to "go and proclaim." The message for the two disciples on the road to Emmaus was the same—to go to Galilee and proclaim the risen Lord. Whether we are pastors or laypeople, men or women, no matter what our jobs are or what situation we find ourselves in, we have only one mission as Christians. And that is to share Jesus Christ right where we are, in the middle of our everyday lives.
주님의 명령은 ‘모든 민족’을 향해 있습니다. 유대인만의 구원을 생각하던 당시로서는 가히 혁명적인 선포였습니다. 이 복음의 물결은 언더우드 선교사를 비롯한 수많은 이를 통해 조선에까지 이르렀습니다. 최근 저는 한국 최초의 자생 교회인 소래교회와 맥킨지(William John McKenzie) 선교사의 기록을 읽고 큰 감동을 받았습니다. 1893년 캐나다에서 혈혈단신으로 조선을 찾은 그는 스스로 조선인이 되기를 자처했습니다. 짚신을 신고 한국 음식을 먹으며 주민들의 고통 속에 깊이 뛰어들었습니다. 소래교회의 첫 담임목사가 된 그는 동학농민운동 당시, 피 흘리는 동학군들을 정성껏 치료해 주기도 했습니다. 서학(기독교)을 반대하던 동학교도들이 오히려 맥킨지를 존경하여 교회 건축 성금을 냈다는 일화가 있습니다. 진심 어린 사랑이 어떻게 벽을 허무는지를 보여주는 전대미문의 사건이었습니다.
"The Lord’s command is for 'all nations.' Back then, when people thought salvation was only for the Jews, this was a truly revolutionary announcement. This wave of the Gospel eventually reached the shores of Korea through so many people, including Missionary Horace Underwood. Recently, I was deeply moved by the story of William John McKenzie and Sorae Church, the first church in Korea started by the people themselves. In 1893, he came to Korea all alone from Canada and chose to live exactly like a local. He wore straw shoes, ate Korean food, and dove headfirst into the suffering of the people. During the Donghak Peasant Revolution, he, as the first senior pastor of Sorae Church, devoted himself to treating the wounds of the bleeding soldiers. There is even a story that the Donghak followers—who were totally against Christianity at the time—actually respected him so much that they donated money to help build his church. It was an incredible, unheard-of moment that showed how sincere love can tear down any wall.
그러나 그는 30세도 되지 않은 젊은 나이에 일사병의 충격 가운데 세상을 떠났습니다. 그러나 그의 약혼녀 맥컬리는 슬픔을 딛고 조선으로 건너와 그의 남은 유산을 교회에 기증하며 선교의 유업을 이었습니다. 맥켄지의 비석 뒤편에는 맥컬리가 쓴 이런 글귀가 새겨져 있습니다. “한 알의 밀알이 땅에 떨어져 죽으면 열매가 많다 함이 옳도다. 소래교회는 조선의 처음 열매요, 목사의 몸은 여기서 자도다.”
However, he passed away before he even turned thirty, suffering from heatstroke. But his fiancée, Mary McCully, didn't let her grief stop her. She came to Korea herself, donated what he left behind to the church, and carried on his mission. On the back of McKenzie’s tombstone, she carved these words:
'It is true that if a grain of wheat falls into the ground and dies, it bears much fruit. Sorae Church is the first fruit of Korea, and the pastor’s body rests here.'"
맥킨지 선교사와 에스더 권 선교사님은 시공간은 다르지만, 주님의 지상명령을 수행하다 주님 품에 안겼다는 점에서 같은 길을 걸으셨습니다. 에스더 권 선교사님 역시 자신의 삶을 온전히 내어줌으로써 주님의 가르침을 증명해 내셨습니다.
Missionary McKenzie and Missionary Esther Kwon lived in different times and places, but they walked the exact same path in the sense that they were both called home to the Lord while carrying out His Great Commission. Missionary Esther Kwon also proved the truth of the Lord’s teachings by giving her life completely to His work.
그렇다면 오늘을 사는 우리에게 주어진 선교적 과제는 무엇입니까? 이제 세계는 하나로 연결되어 있습니다. 우리가 사는 이 미국 땅은 이미 ‘모든 민족’이 모여 사는 선교의 현장입니다. 저는 수년전 엘에이 컨벤션 센터에서 미국 시민권 선서할 때가 기억납니다. 무려 98개국에서 온 다양한 문화를 지닌 사람들이 선서를 하였습니다. 그렇습니다. 우리는 마켓에서, 공원에서, 학교와 직장에서 매일 열방을 만납니다. 이제 선교는 우리의 ‘일상’이 되어야 합니다. 오지에서 헌신하시는 선교사님들을 후원하는 것만큼이나 중요한 것은, 우리 곁에 있는 서로 다른 이웃에게 예수 그리스도의 사랑을 흘려보내는 것입니다. 이 사명은 우리 스스로 끝낼 수 있는 것이 아닙니다. 하나님이 완결하실 때까지 수행되어야 하는 사명입니다.
So, what is the missionary task given to us living today? We live in a world that is now fully connected. Right here, in this land of America, we are already standing in a mission field where 'all nations' have gathered. I still remember my U.S. citizenship oath ceremony at the LA Convention Center a few years ago. There were people from 98 different countries, representing so many different cultures, all taking that oath together. It’s true—we meet the nations every single day at the grocery store, in the park, at school, and in our workplaces. Mission work needs to become part of our 'daily lives.' Of course, it is vital to support missionaries who are sacrificing their lives in remote corners of the world. But it is just as important to let the love of Jesus Christ flow out to the diverse neighbors standing right next to us. This mission isn't something we can finish on our own. It’s a mission that must be carried out until the day God Himself brings it to completion.
선교는 하나님께서 만민을 향해 직접 행하시는 거룩한 사역입니다. 우리는 그 영광스러운 역사에 동참하도록 부름 받은 주의 종들입니다. 자신을 온전히 드려 하나님의 선교에 투신하셨던 고(故) 에스더 권 선교사님의 삶을 가슴에 새깁시다. 우리 또한 각자의 삶의 자리에서 예수 그리스도의 향기를 전하는 '일상의 선교사'로 살아가는 멋진 동문들이 되시기를 소망합니다.
Mission is a holy work that God Himself carries out for all people. We are simply the servants of the Lord, called to take part in that glorious history. Let’s truly take to heart the life of the late Missionary Esther Kwon, who gave her whole self to God's mission. It’s my sincere hope that all of us, as proud alumni, will live as 'everyday missionaries'—spreading the fragrance of Jesus Christ right where we are in our daily lives.

연세대학교 사회과에서 학사와 석사 학위를 취득한 후, 독일 빌레펠트 대학교와 미국 클레어몬트 대학원에서 사회학과 역사철학을 중심으로 박사 과정을 밟으며 학문적 여정을 이어갔다. 이 과정에서 목회에 대한 깊은 소명을 느끼게 되었고, 이후 신학으로 방향을 전환하여 샌프란시스코 신학대학원에서 신학석사(M.Div.)를, 클레어몬트 신학대학원에서 목회학 박사(D.Min.) 학위를 받았다.
미국 Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) 교단에서 목사 안수를 받은 뒤에는 태평양아시안 실행목사로, 또 제자회신학재단의 선교평화 교육 디렉터로 활동하며 다양한 사역과 교육에 힘써왔다. 현재는 캘리포니아 뉴포트비치에 위치한 살림교회에서 공동 목사로 섬기고 있으며, 클레어몬트 신학대학원의 Practical Theology of Conflict, Healing, and Transformation in Korean Contexts 프로그램에서 목회학 박사 논문 편집 위원으로도 활동하고 있다.
