13일(화) 오전 10시, 디케이터 소재 콜롬비아장로교회에서 ‘콜롬비아신학대학 제 9대 총장 취임식’이 열려, 스티븐 A. 해이너(Stephen A. Hayner) 신임총장이 취임했다. 이날 행사에는 신학대학 교수진과 학생들을 비롯 PCUSA 소속 한인 목회자들과 관계자들이 다수 참석해 해이너 신임총장과 새로운 출발을 다짐하는 콜롬비아신학대학을 축하했다.
‘One Church, One House, One Lord’를 주제로 진행된 취임식에서는 주제 그대로 다양한 연령층과 인종, 남성과 여성 모두 참여하는 의미 있는 순서를 진행했고, 킴벌리 롱, 로저 니시오카 목사가 회중과 함께 스티븐 해이너 신임총장에게 손을 얹고 기도하고 축복했다.
스티븐 해이너 신임총장은 “신학대의 상황과 미래는 우리의 능력밖에 있음을 고백한다. 앞으로 한 달간은 비전을 새롭게 하는데 투자할 생각이다. 과연 콜롬비아신학대가 빠르게 변하는 시대를 아우를 수 있는 리더를 기르고 있는가 자문하며, 그 어떤 것보다 중요한 새로운 리더를 양성하는데 최선을 다하겠다”고 소감을 밝혔다.
특별히 이날 취임식에는 허정갑 교수의 첼로 듀엣, 한인 학생들의 파송의 노래 등이 어우러져 눈길을 끌었다.
월드비전 이사로 활동,‘친한파’로 지역 목회자들 기대 크다
지역 한인 목회자들은 스티븐 해이너 신임총장의 취임을 환영하는 분위기다. 해이너 신임총장은 국제 월드비전 이사로 활동하면서 한국을 3차례 방문한 바 있으며, 교회성장학 교수로 한국교회의 성장과 영성에 큰 관심을 갖고 있는 ‘친한파’로 알려져 있다. 또한, 내년 중에 지역 한인 목회자와 함께 한국 장로교신학교, 연세대신학교, 명성교회를 방문할 예정이기도 하다.
한인 목회자로 콜롬비아신학대학 이사인 정인수 목사(연합장로교회)는 “스티븐 해이너 신임총장은 복음주의적 신학노선을 갖고 있으며, 리더십과 교회성장에 전문가로 한국과 한국교회에 애정이 있는 목회자”라고 소개했다.
이어 “그는 학자 중심적이며, 명제적 교육에 중점을 두고 있는 커리큘럼을 바꿔야 할 필요를 지적했으며, 변화하는 목회 환경 속에서 시대를 이끌어 나갈 수 있는 실질적인 목회 커리큘럼을 강화할 계획인 것으로 알고 있다. 변화될 커리큘럼에는 영성훈련, 리더십, 인간관계 갈등 해결 등이 포함될 것으로 생각된다. 신학교가 해이너 총장과 함께 새로운 방향으로 나갈 것”이라는 기대를 나타냈다.
한인 학생들과 한인교회에 끼칠 영향에 대한 질문에 정인수 목사는 “앞으로 한국교회들과 자주 교분과 친교를 가질 것이다. 또 학교 내 한미목회연구소를 중심으로 더 활발한 연구가 이뤄지지 않을까 생각한다”고 예상했다.
예배학 부교수이자 한미목회연구소장인 허정갑 목사는 스티븐 해이너 신임총장의 선출은 이례적이었다면서 “본인도 몰랐고 교수진도 예상하지 못한, 하나님의 뜻이라고 믿고 있다. 통상 총장은 외부에서 영입하는데, 선출위원회에서 해이너 교수에게 학교가 가야 할 비전을 듣고 싶어서 이야기를 시작한 것이 다시 이분의 비전으로 돌아왔다. 행정능력도 있고, 다른 대학 총장을 역임한 경력 등 자격요건이 충분한 만큼 총장직을 제안했고 순종해서 결정됐다”고 총장선출 과정을 설명했다.
이어 “미국 신학교들이 자유주의신학으로 치우치는 우려를 완전히 씻어주는 분이다. 신학교에서 이분을 선택한 것은 복음주의 노선에서 보수신앙을 갖고 교회성장을 목표로 하며, 더 많은 목회자 신학생들을 배출하려는 의지를 드러낸 것이다. 한국교회에서는 해이너 신임총장의 선출을 기뻐하고 있으며, 한국교회에 적지 않은 영향을 끼칠 것으로 본다. 특히, 한인 2세 사역자들에 긍정적인 호감이 있는데, 복음주의 지도자들과 맺고 있는 유대관계를 통해 한국교회의 영향력을 미국사회에 끼칠 수 있는 역할을 해줄 것으로 기대한다”고 덧붙였다.
